Hakeem Abdul Hameed took over the administration of Hamdard at the age of 14 in 1922. He tried his best to bring the Unani System of Medicine on Modern Scientific lines. He expended the Business across the bylanes of Old Delhi.
The exemplary life of Hakeem Abdul Hameed spanned almost the entire 20th Century. He gave a new life to the Unani system of Medicine at a time when it had stagnated beyond belief.
For this contribution, he won international recognition and was honored through various awards like

  • Padma Shri in 1965.
  • Padma Bhushan in 1992.
  • Former Soviet Union also honored him with Avicenna Award in 1982 (Ibn Sīnā; 980 – 1037 CE, commonly known in the West as Avicenna, was the preeminent philosopher and physician of the Muslim world).
  • He was also honorary member of the Academy of the Medical Science of Islamic Republic of Iran.
  • D.Litt. from Hamdard University Karachi
  • IRCICA Award given posthumously by the President of Turkey in 2000.
  • Hakeem Abdul Hameed was Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University.

In the decades since, over 25 educational research institutions were established culminating in the Jamia Hamdard. The range is astounding – ranging from primary education to post doctoral research, from Unani Medicine to Information Technology, from Islamic Studies to Business Management.

Hamdard Archives includes the correspondence with of prominent people such as Jawahar Lal Nehru, Smt. Indira Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Rajiv Gandhi, Dr. Zakir Hussain and many others. The subjects encompass Education, Social Reforms, Communal Harmony, Elements in Health & Diseases, social economic and political issues and socio-economic, educational and cultural betterment of the community.
Hakim Abdul Hameed Award was given for outstanding contribution in the field of Unani and Ayurveda. Started in the year 2008, it will be given annually to encourage research in natural medicines. The award consists of a certificate and cash of Rs. 3 lakh. Two runners-up will be given Rs. 2 lakh and Rs. 1 lakh.
